The Cowboys own a 2-6 record and have looked like one of the worst teams in the NFL despite Super Bowl aspirations heading into the season. The Cowboys head into Sunday’s matchup with the 7-0 Pittsburgh Steelers as severe underdogs. Quarterbacks Dak Prescott, Andy Dalton, and Ben DiNucci will not play.
Throw in a rigid injury report, and a 2-7 record appears to be on the horizon. The idea of tanking for a better draft pick has surfaced, but the Cowboys owner wants nothing to do with that idea.
“Tanking has nothing to do with the performance of a player, the performance of a coach, the performance of getting better, the performance of the things you do to try to win the ballgame in my mind,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.
Jones went on to further explain that playing younger players gets them more experience and it’s not tanking.
“Could you make a decision to play a younger player more or a player that you’re going to be pretty firm that you’re going to be going forward with in contract wise than a different situation?” said Jones, via ProFootballTalk. “And the answer is I can see that. Yeah. I can see that you make sure that you get these guys those reps. The only way to have and get better in the NFL is for reps, and game reps are precious, hard to come by.”
The Cowboys are going against that principle on Sunday. According to head coach Mike McCarthy, via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are going to play either Cooper Rush or Garrett Gilbert because the team “needs more experience this week.”
Right. The Cowboys are totally not tanking…..
