Mike Tomlin oversees a fight for the backup job between Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Hakins, with Ben Roethlisberger still holding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback job. What does Tomlin think of the competition thus far?
Tomlin complimented both the quarterbacks’ clock management skills in a media interview after last night’s 16-3 Hall of Fame Game victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Steelers’ head coach, Tomlin, said that neither quarterback stood out.
“I thought they did a nice job, particularly from a play clock standpoint,” Tomlin said. “New verbiage and things of that nature. First time in the stadium with a real play clock. It’s difficult for us to simulate in practice settings. I thought they did a nice job managing some of those things, but largely, I thought all of their performances were positive.”
In last night’s 16-3 win over the Dallas Cowboys, Rudolph and Rudolph split reps. Rudolph was 6-9 for 84 yards, and lost one fumble. Haskins was 8-13 for 54 yards.

For the past two seasons, Mason Rudolph has been the Steelers primary backup. He is 5-4 as a starter, with 15 touchdowns (61 percent completion rate) and five touchdowns.
After being cut midseason by the Washington Football Team, Dwayne Hakins signed a reserve/future deal with the Steelers in January. Although he was a former first round pick, he has not been able to make an impact on field.
Steelers are aiming for Super Bowl glory this year, as Ben Roethlisberger may be retiring. It is crucial to have a backup plan in case Big Ben gets hurt.
