With a new regime, the Dallas Cowboys want to emulate the best. That’s the New England Patriots.
The Patriots have won six super Bowls over a span of 20 years, but last season, the Patriots had the No. 1 defense to add to their hall of records.
The Cowboys have seen plenty of pieces on the defensive front move. The franchise brought in a new defensive coordinator. Four starters, including cornerback Byron Jones, are gone. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys are lost on the defensive side though.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones believes that with a new regime, the Cowboys can be like the best in the league.

“You want to have flexibility, you want to have great players, you want to be able to scheme against the offense you’re going to play around,” Jones told Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan. “A perfect example of that and people who’ve had tremendous success is Coach Belichick in New England in terms of how they scheme and how they use different fonts and different schemes in order to have success on the defensive side of the ball.”
The pass rush features veteran DeMarcus Lawrence, as well as new additions Gerald McCoy, Aldon Smith, and Dontari Poe. Along with a healthy Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, the Cowboys will rely upon the top talent on the team.
A lot of this will depend on how the Cowboys can fix their spot at cornerback. With Jones gone, and Anthony Brown the only returnee, there are serious concerns regarding the secondary.
The draft will be a telling story for the team’s future.
