Just another day and another team in the top-5 rumored to be trading down.
Just days after the Detroit Lions confirmed speculation that the No. 3 overall pick in the draft is on the market, the New York Giants are rumored to have interest in trading the No. 4 overall pick.
“David Gettleman is seriously contending trading down from No. 4”, via NFL Update.
After finishing 4-12 in 2019, GM David Gettleman has another premium pick. In the last two years, Gettleman has drafted David Jones and Saquon Barkley. Both picks were highly criticized and hearing that he will draft down will likely shake fans.
When the Giants drafted Barkley, the team didn’t necessarily need a running back given their awful situation. Now, he turned out to be a productive player, but the team still hasn’t produced wins.
As for Jones, he was taken at No. 6 overall and was not even predicted as a top-10 pick.
Why would this year be the year to trade down with players like Isaiah Simmons or Tristan Wirfs on the market?
Trading a high pick will gain back a large return; however, do fans really trust Gettleman to make that decision, especially given the circumstances.
According to a report from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, Gettleman could be desperate for a quick turnaround.
“He made a case for ownership to come back,” via Glazer. “He presented a plan for how he’ll turn it around in a year. That needs to happen. If it doesn’t happen, he’ll be gone and rightfully so. If he doesn’t follow through, it’s time to go.”
Either way, it looks like this could be his last year running the team.
