Dontario Drummond, a former Ole Miss star, was not selected for the 2022 NFL Draft. However, Dontario Drummond signed with the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night, per Matt Zenitz.
Drummond was a former Mississippi three-star recruit. He started his college career at JUCO and was first-team NJCAA All-American. He then moved to FBS and played in all 12 games in his first year. He was a formidable weapon for Matt Corral in 2021 and led the Rebels’ with 76 receptions and 1,028 receiving yards, eight touchdowns and a record of 828 receiving yards. When asked, he also served as punt returner for the Rebels.
Drummond ended his career at Ole Miss with 15 receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and a total of 17 touchdowns. This was a versatile weapon for the Rebels offense.
Lance Zierlein, NFL.com’s reporter, explained that Drummond’s film was not enough to make him stand out from the rest of the field. However, his speed at the combine is impressive and his route running skills are a big plus. Although his physical attributes are all NFL-ready, his 2021 breakout season wasn’t challenging him enough. Zierlein said that Drummond’s play speed is not always consistent, and his timed speed may be an indicator of where his draft stock might be heading. He’s a good athlete who can run a more complex route, but his hands and ball skills might not improve. Drummond’s ability to run after every catch is his best asset and adds instant value to a team. Drummond has a fascinating ceiling, but a lower floor for Day 3 targets.
