CeeDee Lamb was unable to practice Wednesday due to a foot injury. This is yet another blow for a Dallas Cowboys unit that’s already short of proven talent.
The Good news is that Lamb’s injury has not been considered serious. Lamb is expected to continue his role as the Cowboys’ unquestioned No. 1 receiver for this season. Clarence Hill Jr., Fort Worth Star-Telegram, spoke with Lamb about his injury.
“Talked to CeeDee Lamb. Has a cut on his foot that required stitches. Wouldnt say how it happened. Just begrudgingly said clown stuff,” Hill tweeted.
Lamb cannot miss any Cowboys action. Lamb being out, rookies Jalen Tolbert and Dennis Houston took over at wide receiver in the practice with the Chargers. Noah Brown was also involved with the first-team offense.
Two of Dallas’ key players in the passing game were lost this offseason, Amari cooper and Cedrick wilson. Cooper was traded to the Browns in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and a salary dump. Wilson signed a $22.05 million, three-year deal with the Dolphins as a free agent. The Cowboys do have a Pro Bowl-caliber option with Lamb, but they didn’t address their depth in the offseason.
Speedster KaVontae Turpin is an intriguing prospect for the Cowboys. He was not drafted in 2019, but made an impact in USFL by catching 44 passes for 580 yards and four touchdowns over 10 games. He also rushed for 129 yards with a touchdown and returned punts.
“The thing that jumps out is he’s dynamic with the ball in his hands,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said during his press conference after the signing. “You’ve got to always pay attention to that. When we evaluate personnel, particularly when we talk about special teams as a priority there, you have to make sure the player can also add something on offense. His ability to make plays with the ball, we feel it’s a really good fit.”
Turpin, who has also played in The Fan Controlled Football League (FCFL) and The Spring Football League, hopes to play a part on special teams but also wants to be able to demonstrate his skills as a receiver.
“They know I can play special teams,” Turpin said on Wednesday. ”That is easy. I am trying to show I can play receiver at this level. That was the first deep ball they have thrown to me all training camp. I had to make that play.”
The Cowboys aren’t eager to expand their receiver pool, despite their inexperience at the position with Michael Gallup & James Washington both sidelined to begin the year.
“Let’s give these guys a chance,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on August 2 during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan‘s “GBag Nation.” I don’t want to be out here pushing and being aggressive, as far as going outside [and looking] at what may be available, that are free agents right now, or otherwise. I think we have a lot of ways to throw the ball. And a lot of people that can get it.”
Lamb stated that he would not be against adding another veteran, but encouraged the young players to take advantage of the chance to get more reps. Lamb stated that “the door is open to opportunity.” “I feel that the younger men are taking advantage of this opportunity and trying something.” Cole Beasley and TY Hilton are still available as veteran agents.
