Training camp revealed new roster requirements for the Dallas Cowboys as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Cowboys are currently dealing with injuries to CeeDee lamb, Michael Gallup, and James Washington. The Cowboys also traded Amari Cooper this offseason to the Browns, leaving them extremely short at receiver. Scotty Miller could be the odd man in Tampa Bay with the addition of Julio Jones.
Cooper Rush and Will Grier are the two most prominent backup quarterbacks in Dallas. Rush is the Cowboys’ 2021 victor over the Vikings. Dak Prescott was out with a calf injury. Although Grier’s training camp was successful, Dallas will not be able to keep three quarterbacks on its final 53-man roster.
Both the Cowboys & Buccaneers could swap Miller for Grier to fill a gap before they face each other in the season’s first game on September 11. Both players are on the roster bubble, so a trade would be able to prevent one team from going through waivers.
The Buccaneers will continue to search for TB12’s successor, even if Brady is able to return in time for Week 1, as they had hoped. 2022 could be the final season for the legend quarterback in Tampa. Trask was selected by the Bucs in the second round 2021 NFL draft. However, the former Florida quarterback has not been able to climb above third place on the depth chart the past two seasons.
The Buccaneers have another option for the future with Grier. Former West Virginia signal-caller Grier was once thought to have been a first round pick, before falling to the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. Although Grier has not been able to establish himself as an NFL quarterback yet, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy believes that the former Mountaineers standout is making progress.
McCarthy stated that “I believe Will’s taken a step forward” during an August 9 press conferences. “I think Will has done a great job with his reps. It was obvious that he felt the command. Coming in at the same time he did [last season], I believe the language barrier [of offense] is always a problem when you enter a new system such as ours.
“Grier was there every day during the offseason and I believe you can see that it paid off. It’s evident that he is playing faster and making more plays. He definitely has the ability to play in a pocket and out of it.

Miller was a trusted receiver for Brady during the Bucs’ Super Bowl run 2020. In his 15 appearances in 2020, the wideout had 33 receptions and 501 yard touchdowns. Miller was not healthy one year later. He appeared in only nine games and had five receptions for 38 yards by 2021.
Miller would be a perfect fit for the Cowboys, who have been looking for a slot receiver threat. Miller’s unique skillset would complement Lamb and Gallup in a potentially explosive Dallas offense, even when they are at full strength at wideout.
Tampa Bay’s receiver group is impressive with Jones, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin all expected to play important roles this season. Miller will now be competing for a spot on the roster with Tyler Johnson and Jaelon Darden.
