The Cowboys have a backup plan in Andy Dalton, but that is not going to hush the rumor mill.
According to a new report, the Cowboys showed interest in Detroit Lions quarterback David Blough. Many believed that Matthew Stafford, who played high school football in Texas before attending Georgia, would be the Cowboys top priority in the future.
Instead, the Cowboys were interested in the 25-year old Blough. The former Purdue product has been with the Cleveland Browns before Detroit signed him to their active roster on Saturday.
The Lions supposedly did that because the Cowboys were looking to pluck Blough away according to NFL insider Chris Burke.
With that in mind, that likely led to the Cowboys picking up Garrett Gilbert from the Browns’ practice squad.
In 2019, Gilbert appeared in five games, and owns just a 2-6 passing mark in his career. He is a former sixth-round pick by the ex-St. Louis Rams in 2014.
However, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Ben DiNucci will be the team’s backup.
“Frankly, I’m not as concerned about Andy Dalton’s preparation as much as I’m focused on Ben DiNucci’s,” McCarthy said on Thursday, via 247Sports. “We have to make sure that the No. 2, that’s where the biggest preparation and change is going on.”
Per a league source, the Lions signed David Blough to their active roster to match an offer from the Cowboys, who wanted to poach him off the practice squad.

The team drafted DiNucci No. 231 overall, taking the James Madison quarterback in the seventh round.
