Although a number of possible quarterback moves have been mentioned by the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones has ruled out the possibility of the Cowboys making a significant trade. Jones stated that he doesn’t expect the Cowboys make a deal with the San Francisco 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo. This is because Dallas doesn’t have any trades “in the mill.”
Jones said that the people who are ready to play for us as quarterback are those that have played preseason: Cooper Rush, Will Grier and [Will] Grier.” Jones spoke on September 13, 2022 during an interview on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan” “They had a real rival. Grier was unable to finish the game due to a hamstring injury, but should now be able to resume play. We’ve had a lot of great snaps from those guys in practice and preseason games.
They are experienced in the offense and will give their best to us. This is unlikely because we don’t have any potential trades pending.
“Those guys know the offense well, have had a lot of reps in it and consequently give us our best shot. It’s unlikely since we don’t have any potential trade pending — not pending, but in the mill — it’s unlikely that you’d have a veteran quarterback that could get back in here and be ready to play as well as those guys can play, even if you thought you might have a talent advantage.”
Jones’ comments appear to contradict what Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said just one day before. This could be due to the positive post-surgery reports that the team received about Prescott’s condition. Prescott will not be placed on injured reserve by the Cowboys, although the team still hopes that Prescott can make a comeback in October. McCarthy said that the Cowboys were still “working through” potential additions to their quarterback lineup and suggested that roster moves might be coming.
McCarthy stated that “We’re working on it” during his September 12 press conference. “Frankly, Jerry [Jones] has just left a meeting and Will [McClay] as well as Stephen [Jones] have been hard at work on it all day. While I was in the meetings, Stephen and Will just left me. We’re currently having several discussions.
“We’ll look at those things [adding a veteran quarterback]. Like I answered earlier, we definitely anticipate making some roster moves, probably by [September 13].”
The Niners have made it clear that Garoppolo is still available for trade. Although the veteran quarterback has a no trade clause, the Cowboys situation could still be attractive given the current vacancy. Kyle Shanahan, 49ers head coach, stated that the team would listen to any Cowboys trade requests for Garoppolo.
Shanahan stated to reporters that “just like all players, they’ll listen and hear from anybody on any topic.” “This never changes for any coach or player. We’ll always be open to any player or coach.
All indications point to Rush and Grier being the Cowboys’ backup quarterback in Prescott’s absence. Jones comments suggest that Dallas will add another quarterback, but Jones has indicated it will likely be a practice team player.
