Troy Aikman is doing a great job at FOX. However, the ex-star of the Dallas Cowboys has said that he has thought about joining an NFL front office.
“It’s something that I guess I’ve always somewhat entertained,” Aikman said in 2019. “I have had the opportunity to speak with John Elway, [Broncos general manger] in previous years. I have visited John Lynch, the 49ers general manager, several times. I was impressed by his decision to move to San Francisco. It would be very difficult. To leave the job I had to do, I would have to give up a lot. Although it’s a very demanding job, I believe the reward would be worth it.
We’ll never know if I get that chance, but the chances of it happening decrease with each passing year. Although I know that teams are trying to find young talent and groom them for the long-term, relativelly speaking, I still have a lot of great years and feel that I can relate to those experiences.
Could the Cowboys have a GM job? Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, was asked about it during training camp.
“I would consider it and I do consider it,” Jones said. I would not be opposed to it. If we had to make a decision about football personnel, I would put Troy at the top of the list.
Aikman doesn’t appear to be interested in this role, however.
“It’s a long shot in Dallas,” he told SI.com’s Mike Fisher. “I think it’s always been a long shot in Dallas for the simple reason that it’s a family affair. He’s worked in the front office since the purchase of the team, having had two sons, Jerry, and Stephen. They don’t need that kind of person. That’s what I have known all my life.”
