Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott suffered a severe injury to his knee in Sunday’s victory against Detroit and required medical attention. While he was able to return to action and make an impact, questions remain about his health.
Although Mike McCarthy, the head coach, did not give an update on Elliot’s condition during Monday’s press conference, he said that he believes the running back will be able to overcome any injury. Dallas is used seeing Elliot injured but finds a way through.
McCarthy stated, “We know what Zeke has.” “He’s going to line up and play regardless of what.”
It’s no surprise that Elliot is Dallas’ leading rusher for the season. Many people wanted Tony Pollard as the new leader, but Elliot has been the main bell-cow, especially since Dak Preston was out of the team. Elliot is fourth in the league with 443 yards and four touchdowns from 109 attempts.
Elliot was also suffering from a knee injury that lasted most of the 2021 season. He was able play through the pain and helped guide the Cowboys to a NFC East title, before another early playoff exit.
During Sunday’s match against the Detroit Lions, Elliott sustained an apparent leg injury. Elliott was unable to return and was assessed on the sidelines after a hit.
UPDATE: Although the injury seemed serious, Elliott is expected to be fine. Elliott was on the field as the second half began. He played one play in which he jumped over a defender.
Elliott made a handoff, got the first down his team required but was then tackled by safety DeShon Elliott. Deshon fell on Ezekiel’s right knee with his helmet, causing the Cowboys star to fall on the field. Ezekiel was running for 28 yards on seven carries at the time of his injury. Ezekiel was the Cowboys’ leading rusher.
“I knew I was tough, and that I could play through injuries. It was definitely tough, but it’s my job,” Elliott said of his improvement, according to the team website. “You’ve got to alter and evolve as a pro. My training now focuses on what I need to get better at, what my deficiencies are, where I need to get stronger.”
