Some people were shocked Monday by the San Francisco 49ers’ decision to bring back Jimmy Garoppolo in another season.
He’ll be Trey Lance’s backup in 2022-23, even though he played all of the season last year.
He will receive $6.5 million in guaranteed cash and could potentially earn $15.45million if all the bonuses are redeemed. It also contains a no trade clause and no franchise tag clause.

Garroppolo will be able to remain with the 49ers and become an unrestricted, free agent next season.
Garoppolo ran for 3,810 yards in the air last season. He also scored 20 touchdowns and had 12 interceptions. The 49ers were led by him to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Los Angeles Rams 20-17.
He led the 49ers to Super Bowl victory the year before, but they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20.
At 1 p.m., the 49ers will face off against the Chicago Bears to kick off their 2022 regular season. ET on September 11.
