After Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, the Steelers seem to have their succession plan. They drafted Kenny Pickett from Pitt in the first round 2022 NFL Draft. He will likely compete with Mason Rudolph or Mitch Trubisky for the starting job.
Mike Florio thinks he has a better idea of what the Steelers should do as a QB. The Steelers were included in the list of nine teams that should trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers’ QB.
“If rookie Kenny Pickett won’t be ready, the question becomes whether Garoppolo would be better than Mitch Trubisky. Many would say that, despite Garoppolo’s inability to get the 49ers over the top, he is,” Florio wrote.
Florio’s idea was quickly rejected by almost every Steelers fan. Some people have pointed out that Trubisky was taken in free agency so that the Steelers wouldn’t give up any assets for Garoppolo.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract is another matter. It is significant. This year, he is owed $24.2million in base salary and has a cap of almost $27 million.
The Steelers won’t be able to afford Garoppolo unless the 49ers are willing to pay some of the contract and the cap hit.
It is likely that the Steelers have come to terms with 2022 being a transition year for their offense. They don’t have to waste valuable assets, even late-round picks, for a player that might only play one season.
