After 12th game, Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback has tied his career record for interceptions with 12. He threw 12 picks last season as a full-time starter in 2018.
This uptick of turnovers is undoubtedly frustrating for the 2018 league MVP. However, he seems to not be too bothered about his career-high interception figures.
Mahomes stated that “it just happens,” and added, per NBC’s ProFootballTalk. “Fortunately enough, our defense plays good enough that when they do happen, they can get stops and get turnovers, or whatever it may be, and not let it affect the team. You also know that turnovers are an important part of the game. We are losing the turnover battle because our defense is getting too many turnovers. While I will try to minimize them, I must be myself and continue to throw footballs and allow guys to make plays.
Mahomes might have responded differently earlier in the season — but it’s difficult to be disappointed when your team is on a five-game winning streak. The Chiefs have managed to throw zero touchdowns and only two interceptions in the last two games.
Some interceptions by Mahomes this year were tipped or dropped passes. This was again dismissed by the star QB as “part of football.”
Mahomes accepted responsibility for the pick after referring to a notable Tyreek Hill dropped pass that was turned into an interception earlier in the year.
Mahomes said that some dropped passes — even those in the game that were intercepted — get people hung up on them. “If I throw the ball better and he makes a catch, probably splits or scores.” “I threw the ball high and hard and it gets picked up.
“People put it on Hill, but it’s really up to me to make a better throw.” I’m trying to improve my throws, and letting those guys catch easier in traffic so they can make plays after the catch.
Mahomes has only three games without an interception this year. He’s also thrown multiple picks in three other games. In his two seasons with the Chiefs, he had just 11 interceptions.
Kansas City will be looking to extend their winning streak by beating Las Vegas on Sunday. Mahomes exploded for 406 yard, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions when he faced the Raiders in Week 10.
