As of now, Mac Jones is the only healthy quarterback on the New England Patriots’ 53-man roster. The front office is looking for reinforcements because they are lacking in depth at this position.
Earlier today, NFL insider Albert Breer reported that New England wants to re-sign Brian Hoyer before its Week 1 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
Hoyer is not the only quarterback to be released recently. The Patriots will sign Hoyer before the season begins.
ESPN Insider Field Yates reports that the Patriots have signed Garrett Gilbert, a former Cowboys quarterback, to their practice team. Gilbert was released by the Cowboys on Tuesday, just before the deadline to make final roster cuts.
Gilbert played in one Cowboys game in 2020. He completed 55.3 percent of his passes, for 243 yards and a touchdown, and an interception.
The Patriots will be signing former Cowboys QB Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad.
Current QB group: Mac Jones as the starter along with Brian Hoyer (PS), Gilbert (PS) and Jarrett Stidham (PUP).

Gilbert will be his second time playing for the Patriots. He played his last game for the Patriots in 2015.
Gilbert is not at a peak in his career but could be an effective backup for New England should he need it.
The regular season is just around the corner and the Patriots’ quarterback room should be Mac Jones, Brian Hoyer (Garret Gilbert), Jarrett Stidham (Garrett Gilbert) Although it isn’t the most deep room in the NFL this doesn’t matter if Jones plays at an elite level.
